Worship with us at PUMC !

MAY 2008

NEWSLETTER

On April 20th we held a fellowship evening with a covered dish dinner and entertainment provided by the youth group followed by a church meeting in which several topics were discussed, among them:

Vacation Bible School . Ashley volunteered to direct this years VBS with John’s help and the assistance of the entire congregation. Let’s do all we can to make this year’s VBS a great one. Volunteers are needed to teach and lead small groups of children in Bible stories, games, crafts, music, and other activities as well as decorating the classrooms, building sets, providing escorts, etc. There is a place for you! Contact Ashley to see what you can do.

Visitors. It is import to greet all our visitors in a prompt and consistent manner, not just by the greeters but by all of us, The Visitor Information Cards are kept on the table in the entrance. The greeter should collect this card as soon as possible, preferably before the service starts, so that the pastor has the info available at the time of announcements.

Acolytes. It was suggested that a class be given to children who wish to be acolytes.

Ushers. Ushers are urged to stand outside the double doors during the call to worship so that they can greet late comers considerately while preventing distractions during the prayer of reading of the Psalms.

Homecoming and Revival. Rev. Larry Patrick, a former pastor at Parker will be traveling from his home in Lousiana to preach both events.

May Fellowship Evening. This month the fellowship event will be an afternoon Charge function as the congregation of Sandy Grove will join us at 12:30 on May 18th to recognize graduating high school seniors and

present the winner of the Rachel Frizzelle Scholorship.

Summer church-wide fund-raiser. A proposed event would to be held in June would combine a yard-sale to be organized by the women’s group with a Bar-b-Que plate or hot dog sale prepared by the men and a car wash by the youth.

  UNITED METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

The Youth Fellowship meet Sunday afternoons at 5:00. All middle school and high school students are invited to join.

We greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior.  We give thanks to the Lord for the many blessings He has given to us.  I have four issues that I would like to share with you. The first issue is our Annual Conference which is 11-14 June at Greenville N.C.   I ask for your prayers that God may bless us to have a Spirit filled experience at the conference. We are delighted to have Clinton Dawkins as our delegate this year. The second issue is our Vacation Bible School (VBS).  VBS is a very important part of our ministry to the youth as well as the adults. I ask for your support and participation. Ashley is our director for VBS and she needs your support to make this training event become one that we will enjoy and remember for a long time.  I plan to teach confirmation classes to those who are available. The third issue is our weekly bible study.  Doing the summer months we will not have weekly bible study. We have just finished a series of lessons based on Characteristics for a Healthy congregation.  In our lesson we look at both positive and negative traits of our congregation.  We plan to share our findings with you at our next fellowship dinner.  The fourth issue is to make time for the Lord in your life.  We can get so busy doing worldly things and less time doing spiritual things. I hope you will never forget we must do spiritual things in order to receive spiritual results.

Your Pastor,

Richard

Parker United Methodist Women deliver Jared Boxes to hospitals every few months. May is one of those times. They are asking for donations to prepare more boxes.

The Jared Box Project is a shoebox size plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, cards, and games. Each box contains items selected for a specific age and gender. The boxes are delivered to hospitals ( Cape Fear Valley ) and are given to chronically ill children. The Jared Boxes provide a special diversion for young patients as they receive chemotherapy and other medical treatments. The first shipment of 25 boxes was delivered in September 2007.  We have decided to prepare10 boxes from now on and the scheduled months are May, August and November.  Donations are acceptable and a list of suggested items will be available for those who would like to contribute.

General Conference at Fort Worth , TX .

The United Methodist Church 's top legislative assembly, the General Conference, will meet April 23- May 2, 2008 to set direction for the denomination for the following four years. As the top policy-making body of the international United Methodist Church , General Conference is the only body that officially speaks for the 11.5-million member denomination.

During the nine-day session, 992 delegates will revise the Book of Discipline, which regulates the manner in which local churches, annual conferences and general agencies are organized. The book also sets policies regarding church membership, ordination, administration, property and judicial procedures.

Delegates also revise the Book of Resolutions, a volume declaring the church's stance on a wide variety of social justice issues. The book contains more than 300 resolutions that are considered instructive and persuasive, but are not binding on members.

This epic exercise in church democracy lasts nine days, during which about 1,600 proposed resolutions and changes to church law and policy – everything from revising the Book of Discipline to remove gender references and redefine “family” to condemning the State of Israel for genocidal practices – will at least get looked at by a committee.
